Responsible for quality of patient care by ensuring that sufficient and properly p! repared personnel carry out the functions of the Department of Nursing. Develops, directs and ensures the implementation and compliance of Standards of Nursing Practice that promote optimum healthcare delivery.
Responsibilities also include knowledge of social, economic, regulatory and legal issues effecting the healthcare system; seeks all opportunities for keeping staff updated in healthcare practices.

Principle Accountabilities: % Of Time Spent
1. Assessment 20%
A. Collects and analyzes data to determine staffing patterns and overall Department of Nursing staffing plans. Uses this data to project staffing needs and to ensure that all nursing units are staffed according to patient needs.
B. Reviews staffing patterns to assess the appropriate number and level of personnel needed to provide quality care.
C. Makes roun! ds to assess the quality of patient care and to identify probl! ems and needs.
D. Investigates complaints concerning patient care and takes appropriate action.
E. With the ADON and nurse managers assess nursing care, environment and equipment regularly to ensure high standards of cleanliness, safety, and infection control and compliance with all regulatory bodies.
2. Planning 20%
A. Plans and develops self-objectives, identifies area of delegation, sets priorities and target dates for completion and identified resources needed.
B. Serves as manager, communicator, participator in department and institutional policy development and planning.
C. Organizes, plans, and directs department functions and activities to comply with long- and short-term objectives and with hospital philosophy and policies.
D. Establishes (with assistance of Executive Director and in conjunction with ADON and nurse managers) philosophy, goals, objectives and standards to achieve high quality nursing car! e.
E. Serves as a liaison between Nursing and other Surrey Place and SLH hospital departments.
F. With the assistance of management personnel, maintains compliance with the job descriptions/performance standards, which are position specific.
G. Monitors compliance of nursing departments with budgeted worked hours.
H. In conjunction with the SLH Department of Education and Surrey Place Clinical Educator, plans ways to promote the growth and development of staff and managers through educational opportunities.
I. Serves on committees.
3. Implementation30%
A. Directs the formulation and implementation of Nursing Policies and Standards.
B. Assists the ADON and nurse managers in developing objectives, planning changes, developing and monitoring standards of nursing care and care delivery systems.
C. Communicates regularly with the Executive Director regarding objectives, staffing needs, budget, hospi! tal policies, and management concerns.
D. Formulates new ideas! to old problems and initiates the change.
E. Maintains compliance with nursing care standards, hospital policies and procedure and regulatory agency requirements.
F. Interprets policies, procedures, objectives, standards, and philosophy to personnel.
G. Serves as resource for the ADON and nurse managers regarding personnel management.
H. Implements activities necessary to meet nursing objectives.
I. Promotes harmonious relationships and favorable attitudes among the healthcare team.
J. Serves as consultant role model for nursing personnel.
K. Collaborates with ADON and nurse managers to initiate planned change and evaluate outcomes to ensure care is safe, efficient, and therapeutic.
L. Supports the Surrey Place Education Director in providing continuing education for personnel.
M. Assesses problems, irregularities and policy violations, takes corrective action and follows-up when necessary. As! sists in solving grievances and problems.
N. Develops admitting and nursing unit discharge procedures and other matters that affect patient care.
O. Assists the ADON and nurse managers in monitoring, preparing and submitting budget information and justification to the Executive Director. Monitors monthly expense and payroll reports, reports variances to Executive Director.
P. Serves as advisor to personnel in providing for psychological and spiritual needs of the patients.
Q. Keeps informed and up-to-date in all aspects of nursing care and management through literature, workshops, seminars, courses, and conferences.
R. Maintains contact and communication with the Executive Director, Department Heads and Medical Staff concerning all areas of direct and indirect patient care and Surrey Place matters.
4. Evaluation 20%
A. Evaluates and analyzes incident reports and assures appropriate follow-up action.
B. ! Continually evaluates the care delivered by direct observation and roun! ds, reviewing results of standard monitoring and patient questionnaires. Ensures continual corrective and follow-up action where deficient.
C. Evaluates the performance of the ADON, nurse managers, MDS Coordinators, Clinical Educator and Managers of areas reporting to them according to their job descriptions/performance standards.
D. In conjunction with the Nurse Managers, evaluates staffing on a regular basis, revising as necessary.
E. Evaluates forms used by the Nursing Departments.
F. Evaluates and revises nursing standards.
G. In collaboration with the ADON and nurse managers, evaluates personnel's performance during emergencies and disasters.
H. Constantly evaluates attitudes, morale and interpersonal relationships and promotes ways to improve in these areas.
I. In collaboration with the ADON and nurse managers, evaluates and ensures that the nursing process is carried out in a continuous manner.
K! . Interviews, hires, supervises, and evaluates nursing managers and other assigned personnel.
L. Orients and assists in the development of nursing managers.
5. Performs other work duties as assigned. 10%

Required Experience:
1. A minimum of five years' nursing experience and 2 years management experience required.
2. Head Nurse/Administrative experience preferred.
3. Demonstrates leadership and management capabilities, including effective communication skills.
4. Demonstrates educational preparation specific to area(s) of responsibility.
5. Membership in one of the professional nursing organizations is recommended.
JOB DUTIES REQUIRE YEARLY COMPLETION OF HOSPITAL SAFETY PROGRAM.
Required Education:
Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Missouri.
Bachelor degree required or currently enrolled in Bachelor De! gree program. BSN preferred

Employee is required to walk occasionally and sit frequently. Employee must lift/carry a light (1-20 lbs.) load occasionally. Employee is occasionally required to bend, squat, lift waist to overhead. Employee is occasionally required to reach forward and reach overhead. For repetitive action, employee is required to use both hands for simple grasping and pushing/pulling. Employee is occasionally exposed to electrical hazards and CRT terminal work. Verbal and cognitive, as well as motor coordination and manual dexterity, are required. Speech, hearing, and near-visual acuity are required. May be needed to work any shift due to 24-hour day, 7 days per week operation.
