The duty station is the Jefferson Barracks
Division; however, the duty station may be changed to one or multiple
associated VAMC locations within the metropolitan St. Louis, MO area based on
the needs of the medical center . This position
is in the bargaining unit. KEY REQUIREMENTS

FUNCTIONS:
Effectively plans and implements the nursing process and the quality of care to patients requiring mental health nursing care and participates fully in the RN Transition! to Practice Program.

1. Self-directed with ability to prioritize workload and demonstrate maximum flexibility.

2. Demonstrated ability to utilize the nursing process as a problem solving model.

3. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with all members of the health team.

4. Participates in performance improvement activities in the unit, service line and Medical Center .

5. Demonstrates an excellent customer service philosophy with both internal and external customers

6. Demonstrates collaborative relationships with the Inter-disciplinary teams in providing continuity of care to the patient

7. Demonstrates self-motivation and independence in professional development, organization of tasks/assignments for the nursing team and in providing a safe patient care environment

8. Demonstrates knowledge and skills in the completion of mental health care, documentation, and standards.

9. Partic! ipates in a one year residency in the RN Transition to Practice program! , which includes a Preceptorship in clinical practice, didactic coursework, and an evidence- based practice project.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
o Th! e completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)

  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Education/Experience

Requirements:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nur! sing (BSN) and no experience.
Preferred Requirements:!
1. BSN
preferred.

2. BLS for
Healthcare Providers Certification required.

3. ACLS Certification preferred.
4. I f
currently in school or recently graduated, must be licensed within 60 days of
graduation.
5. Has less than one year of
experience as a licensed RN

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

The criteria are as follows:
  • Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization;
  • Professional Development: performance, education/career development;
  • Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality;
  • Scientific Inquiry: quality of care! , research.

The
Physical requirements of this position include the following tasks which may be
performed intermittently: lifting of up to 50 lbs. (3 hours), sitting (2
hours), standing (4 hours), walking (8 hours), climbing (1 hour), kneeling (3
hours), bending/stooping (3 hours), twisting (2 hours), pushing/pulling (6
hours), simple grasping (8 hours), fine manipulation (8 hours), reaching above
the shoulder (4 hours), and operating machinery (8 hours).
