The duty station is the John Cochran Division; however, the duty station may be changed to one or multiple associated VAMC locations within the metropolitan St. Louis, MO area based on the needs of the medical center . FUNCTION:
Effectively use the nursing process
to care for patients with varying diagnosis. Develops skills to successfully
assess and care for patients with end stage renal disease. This includes, but
is not limited to hemodialysis and continuous peritoneal dialysis. Works with
the interdisciplinary team to plan care and educate patients with renal
disease. The incumbent is self-directed and can guide and evaluate support
staff. The incumbent will be expected to be available for 24-hour on-call duty.
DUTIES:
The Hemodialysis nurse
performs primary nursing duties for kidney disease patients, such as carrying
out routine nursing assessments, determining risk factors that may affect the patient,
educating the patient on his or her treatment, starting and monitoring
d! ialysis, and administering transfusions where required. During dialysis! , the
nurse also checks on the function of the machine, the patient's vital signals,
and ends the procedure at the appropriate time. For patients who require
dialysis in their own homes, such as bed-ridden patients, the dialysis nurses
are responsible for training other staff or family members in the proper usage
of the dialysis machines and safety protocols. They also provide nursing
support for patients both before and after renal transplantation, and determine
dietary and medication requirements. More complex cases require the dialysis
nurse to initiate end-of-life care and acute dialysis procedures, as well as
working with multidisciplinary nursing and medical professionals. Work well independently and with a multidisciplinary team
to care for the chronic and acute ESRD patient.

- Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
- Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
- Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
- Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors deg! ree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
- Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
- Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
1. Licensed as a registered nurse.
2. Hemodialysis nursing experience preferred.
3. At least 3 years of Medical-S! urgical experience preferred.
4. Graduate of professional school of! nursing..
5. Certified Nursing Nephrology certification preferred.
GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry.
