SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Acute nurse manager, the Acute Staff Nurse is responsible and accounta! ble for the hemodialysis and related therapies for renal failure patient in the acute setting.
Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : Includes but not limited to (other duties may be assigned) the following:
1. Prepares and monitors the equipment used for intermittent or continuous hemodialysis and water treatment in the acute setting, including performing quality control checks.
2. Performs and provides pre, intra, and post documentation of acute patient assessments. Evaluates and makes recommendations regarding patient care delivered.
3. Initiates, monitors and terminates dialysis treatments via all accesses in accordance with established policies and procedures.
4. Administers medications as ordered within the scope of their license and provides documentation of administration and result of medication.
5. Accurately receives, transcribes and implements written and verbal orders from physicians.
6. Acce! pts phone lab diagnostic reports, interprets and forwards the ! information to the physician as necessary.
7. Provides and documents patient/family education for ESRD and other health concerns.
8. Recognizes and can respond to emergency situations, such as cardiac arrest, fire, loss of water and power.
9. Has a working knowledge of the acute departmentâs policies and procedures.
10. Serves as the primary contact for the acute patient to the nephrologistsâ and hospital staff caring for the patient, and as a liaison to the patientâs chronic unit.
11. Upon patientâs discharge, relays appropriate information regarding patientâs hospitalization to chronic unit.
12. Works closely with other acute nurses to complete work as a team.
13. Knowledgeable of DCI guidelines for Occurrence Reports, and completes reports accordingly.
14. Represents DCI in a professional manner in the acute setting.
15. Acts as a preceptor for new staff as assigned.
16. Follows institutionâs guidelines for administrati! on of blood and blood products.
17. Maintains a clean and orderly work environment.
18. Acts as a Charge Nurse during Nurse managerâs absence, supervising all aspects of acute patient care, including staff assignments and patient interventions.
19. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Completion from an accredited Registered Nursing Program
Experience in critical care nursing is preferred
CNN certification preferred.
BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS:
Since this is a healthcare environment, there is the possibility of exposure to infectious / contagious diseases, needle sticks and blood and body fluids. Further information about this positionâs specific work environment and exposure category will be provided during orientation. This position is classified as Category I.
