There is currently one vacancy for a full-time registered nurse in the role of Case Manager for Orthopedics in the Surgical Care Service. The Case Manager is a professional nurse who demonstrates leadership by the ability to collaborate with the clients by assessing, facilitating, planning, and advocating for health needs on an individual basis. The Case Manager works closely with other healthcare professionals and team members, other clinics, internal or external services and community agents. This position reports to the Co-Leader of Surgical Service. The tour of duty will be full-time days, Monday - Friday.

First area of consideration will be given to permanent Kansas City VAMC employees. Internal and External Candidates will be considered. This announcement may be used to fill identical positions vacated within six months of any selections made from the original announcement.

Salary and grade will be determined upon qualifications and experience.

U.S. Citizenship

Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required.

Must pass pre-employment examination.

DUTIES:
The Case Manager is a professional nurse who demonstrates leadership by the ability to collaborate with the clients by assessing, facilitating, planning, and advocating for health needs on an individual basis. This is accomplished by personal contact and telephone triaging. The Case Manager coordinates care for a panel of patients throughout the continuum of care to assure that care is timely, appropriate, of high quality and cost effective. The Case Manager works closely with other healthcare professionals and team members, other clinics, internal or external services and community agents.

Relocation expenses will not be reimbursed.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Qualifications specific to this position include: BSN preferred. Additionally applicant must have three years of nursing experience with previous experience with orthopedic patients preferred; good interpersonal skills, flexibility, and creativity are needed.

Citizen of the United States. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia . In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Must be proficient in spoken and written English .

Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research. Education/Experience Requirements:

Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.

Physical Requirements : The person in this position must be able to navigate all areas of the VA Kansas City Healthcare System, and must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential functions of the position without hazard to themselves or others; stand, walk, bend, stoop, raise arms above shoulder level, climb stairs, use a keyboard, transfer/move adult male & female patients using appropriate assistive devices, push/pull an occupied gurney, and perform all other activities of the position without restrictions. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials. The use of Safe Patient Handling equipment and protocols are strictly enforced to promote patient and staff safety.
