PhD student in the field of photovoltaics and concentrator technology [Germany]

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 2.9 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg is the largest solar research institute in Europe. Our approximately 1,400 employees work towards a sustainable, economic, secure and socially just energy supply system based on renewable energies. We contribute to this with our main research areas of energy supply, energy distribution, energy storage and energy use. Through outstanding research results, successful industrial projects, company spin-offs and global collaborations, we are shaping the sustainable transformation of the energy system.

The focus of the PhD is the development of ultra-fast and energy-efficient optical information and communication technologies (ICT). The aim of the work is the realization of combined communication and power transmission via an all-optical interface.

The interdisciplinary team of the department "Photovoltaics and Concentrator Technology" has, among other things, recently set a new world record of solar energy conversion (47.6%). Using a GaAs-based cell, a peak PV efficiency of 68.9% was demonstrated monochromatically, and data rates of over 1 Gb/s were demonstrated.

In parallel with the work, novel PPC devices are being developed as part of a research project, including innovative wavelength division multiplexing approaches. The work will be performed at the renowned ISE calibration laboratory: https://s.fhg.de/callab. Here you will have access to a unique laboratory infrastructure. In addition, the work is integrated in an interdisciplinary research collaboration with Prof. Harald Haas and the LiFi Centre at the University of Strathclyde (www.lifi-centre.com).

Was Du bei uns tust

  • You will contribute to the development of a novel research field and break new ground in the use of photovoltaic cells as combined power and data receivers.

  • You mentor our student assistants (e.g. in the preparation of their theses) and interns.
  • You exploit the scientific results and present them in scientific journals and at conferences.

Was Du mitbringst

  • You have a university degree in electrical engineering, physics or a comparable field.
  • Ideally, you have already gained experience in the development of electronic systems and are familiar with the practical work with electrical measured variables.
  • You have a sound knowledge of information and communication technology as well as basic knowledge of photovoltaics or are willing to conscientiously build up and apply specialist knowledge in this area.
  • You plan and complete tasks independently and with high quality.
  • You are familiar with MS Office; ideally you have already worked with OriginLab, LabView or Matlab.

Was Du erwarten kannst

  • You will work with one of the most popular employers on a par with the best.
  • Open-minded colleagues are happy to welcome new talents into their ranks.
  • We offer flexible working hours and give you the opportunity to work from home.
